We might be famous for our trousers, but over the last few years we’ve put a lot of effort into our outerwear. Following the same logic that fuels our legendary climbing pants—our jackets combine tough fabrics with functional details and plenty of room to move. After all, the better your jacket is, the better time you’ll have outside. With winter on the way, here’s a run down of some of our favourites…

The Down Puffer Jacket

From mountaineering to the military, down jackets have been keeping people seriously toasty in the world’s most extreme conditions for nearly a century now, and when it comes to warmth in winter, they’re still hard to beat. This is ours—the Down Puffer Jacket. Shape-wise, we took inspiration from the classic short insulated down jackets of the 70s—so while it’s big on warmth, it’s still really wearable—and won’t weigh you down. It’s basically a big coat that doesn’t feel like a big coat, if that makes sense? Just right for when the temperature plummets and you still want to get outside.

The Down Puffer Vest

The Down Puffer Vest comes from the same stable as the Down Puffer Jacket, but comes sans sleeves to make a highly versatile gilet/vest/body warmer. It’s still insulated with that 80% down, 20% feather fill for superior warmth on frosty days—and because of that vest shape it fits just right over a hoodie or a work-jacket. Movement is the name of the game here, and if you need a bit of arm freedom (whether that means chopping up kindling or working on a photography shoot), then this should come in handy.

The Twill Around Jacket

At the other end of the outerwear spectrum, there’s the Twill Around Jacket. This one is basically like the torso-based cousin of our G-Pants—same organic cotton twill, same go-everywhere flavour, same worn-in hues… but as you’ve maybe noticed, it’s a short and sharp blouson jacket. A bit lighter than some of the outerwear on the list here—this is one of those year-round pieces that works just as well over a sweatshirt in the winter as it does over a tee when the sun finally reappears. You’ll find yourself reaching for this one a lot.

The Sherpa Jacket

Fleeces often sit in that mysterious grey area between mid-layer and jacket—but our Sherpa Jacket most definitely deserves a place in our outerwear run-down. Made from super-chunky boa fleece with a stand collar and short, boxy shape, it’s got that vintage hiking DNA, but thanks to that low-key branding, it’s far from old fashioned. These have become a bit of a low-key underground outdoor favourite over the last few years—and that might be down to their sheer usefulness. Mountain scrambles… morning dog walks… late-night strolls back from the pub… there’s not enough space here to list all the situations the Sherpa Jacket excels in.

The Reversible Fleece Vest

For those who like their fleece a little more low-profile, the Reversible Fleece Vest is a two-way bodywarmer made from lightweight polar fleece on one side and hard-wearing dry touch nylon on the other. With pockets on either side, it can be worn either way, and because of that sleek design, it’s particularly handy for slipping under a big coat when a bit of extra warmth is needed. This is a true Swiss army knife of modern layering.

The and wander Down Jacket

Japan’s and wander have made their name crafting finely tuned modern outdoor wear with a sharp, subtle design language. They make carefully considered clothing, paying serious attention to fabric, cut and colour palette. We might sound like we’re getting carried away there, but take a look at the Gramicci x and wander Down Jacket and you’ll know what we mean. Applying their trademark attention to detail to a no-holds-barred winter parka, this is a true masterclass in outdoor design. From the reflective logo to the fully-insulated hood, every aspect of this jacket feels just right. That muted orange is pretty special too…
